Why Freelancers are underpaid (and how to fix it)
Being a skilled freelancer will only move the needle so much.
James here.
Earlier this week, Travis wrote a post in Royalty Ronin (our $2,000/yr deal maker community), which might help a lot of folks who freelance as a side hustle…
Travis mentioned copywriters in the post below - but it applies to all freelancer hustles.
If someone takes to heart what’s talked about?
A freelancer can go from making peanuts and burning the midnight oil…
To working a few hours a week and making more than most full time jobs.
Here’s what Travis wrote (with some redactions):
Ronin can do whatever they want.
Cuz we’re Ronin.
But are you open for advice?
I see Ronin sweating copy.
They SPEND their time, energy and money tryna write amazeballz copy.
This is fine if they want to be paid as a copywriter.
Copywriters get paid peanuts.
If you don’t wanna be paid peanuts…
Then focus on getting control or ownership of digital assets.
Buy (or trade) for PENNIES on the dollar then use templates you already have and hire the copywriters for peanuts!
Last week I acquired a FB group with [tens of thousands of] coaches for [very little money]. (The owner had sold millions, but had a newborn baby and new business interests and wanted to offload it.)
Over the weekend I locked down a [multi-thousands] person email list of coaches AND the autoresponder for [way under market value].
I made another deal last week where I was going to purchase his FB group, but he wanted to remain owner so we’re going to sell my stuff and split it 3 ways. 1/3rd to the owner, 1/3rd to the person I’m going to have operate it, 1/3rd to me.
I’m working another deal with a Ronin here where I’ll buy the group and he’ll do the monetizing.
There are trillions of dollars in unwanted and underused digital assets out there we can scoop up for pennies or offer a rev share if you don’t have cash. Most are open to getting 5% to 10% for a year or two if they don’t have to do any work.
I will make more on ONE deal than most copywriters make in a year.
In fact…
Most of the deals I make will be in profit with one or two sales.
If you’re a great deal maker…
If you can find a great deal people will throw money at you to invest.
If you’re a “great copywriter”…
They will want fifty eleven references, case studies and want to pay you as little as possible.
The choice between becoming a great deal maker or great copywriter is a crucial one.
It is not just a “mental” choice either.
You are what you PRACTICE not what you SAY you are no matter how fervently you believe it.
If you’re spending more time writing copy than making deals you will get paid in line with copywriters: Peanuts!
Now go make a great deal?
Or go write some great copy?
Your choice.
Rooting for Ya,
Travis
