I was thumbing through a Dan Kennedy book yesterday…
When my chubby index finger stopped me on a specific page.
It was an image that grabbed my eye…
Not a particularly pretty one.
It was an image of four postcards.
The post cards were ads for different niches…
Carpet Cleaners
HVAC Contractors
Optometrists
Landscaping Contractors
As I took a closer look…
And read more of the chapter…
I realized these postcards were not selling carpet cleaning or landscaping services…
These postcards were selling TO carpet cleaners and landscapers.
The actual product getting sold…
Insurance.
Each postcard was similar except for one thing…
The Headline.
The basic message went like this…
[ Carpet Cleaner] or [Optometrists] etc
Save 37% on Insurance
Testimonial of Customer
Call 1-800-Insurance
Pretty simple messaging…
Which is what got me to stop and notice.
I could see the benefit immediately…
It had a promise of saving 37% on liability insurance.
But the saving’s copy wasn’t what stood out…
It was the headline that stood out.
Which was…
Optometrist
If I’m an Optometrist getting that postcard…
I immediately know it’s for Me.
I’m going to read it.
Now the reason I share all this is because…
We’re all told to pick a niche.
And we should…
But we don’t have to pick just ONE.
We could pick two… three… four niches.
The problem is this doesn’t make it easy for prospects to know “this is for me”...
So like our insurance example…
We can just tailor our message to the niche.
And then instead of “pick a niche” …
Which can sometimes feel like putting ourselves in a tiny box…
We can pick a few niches…
And have the freedom to pursue several paths until we land on the one or two that fit us best.
