New writers can get paid to travel
You don’t need years of experience to get your first travel writing gigs.
James here.
A former CNN Communications Director (Chris Dwyer) shared an industry truth...
Getting those first 2-3 travel assignments isn't as hard as most think.
Most new writers believe they need years of experience.
They don't.
They believe they need a huge portfolio.
They don't.
What they actually need is a strategic approach.
Chris explained that new writers can start with social media or substacks.
But don’t post just any old thing...
Create focused content that fills specific gaps in existing coverage.
Instead of writing "Top 10 Things to Do in Paris"...
…Which has been done a million times.
Write "Best Vintage Motorcycle Tours in Rural France."
Or "Hidden Art Nouveau Cafes in Paris's 11th Arrondissement."
These micro-focused pieces show PR agencies and tourism boards three crucial things:
Understanding of their clients' needs...
Ability to spot unique angles...
And initiative to create quality content.
After that?
Connect with PR professionals through LinkedIn…
Or twitter….
Study their client list before reaching out.
Then pitch story ideas specifically tailored to their clients.
Mr. Dwyer revealed that many PR agencies actually prefer working with newer writers.
Why?
Because they're often more reliable and eager to prove themselves than jaded veterans.
Once you've built these initial relationships...
Getting those first assignments becomes natural.
PR agencies often recommend their trusted writers to publications.
They also share exclusive opportunities in their networks.
In a nutshell:
*Start with focused, gap-filling content
*Build genuine PR relationships
*Study agency client lists
*Create tailored pitches
*Leverage PR recommendations
I’m working on finding a travel writer to come talk to the group…
And I could use your advice.
What should I ask them about?
…What are your biggest questions?
Reply and let me know.
There’s a good chance it’ll get answered in our conversation.
In your corner,
