A recent article on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) caught my eye.
It was by the CEO of Cloudflare, Mathew Prince.
He was talking about how AI search is changing web traffic.
According to Prince, traditional SEO is taking a hit.
The numbers are pretty wild.
Six months ago, Google crawled 6 pages for every 1 visitor they sent back to a media or publisher’s website.
The numbers are even worse for OpenAI and Anthropic.
That means that when someone publishes content and OpenAI uses that content…
The creator or publisher will get 1 visit (one person) to their site out of 1,500 people that see their summarized content in OpenAI.
I think you can buy scratch off lotto tickets with better odds than that.
So even though creating content has never been easier thanks to AI...
Getting anyone to actually click through to a website has become much harder thanks to AI.
I don’t know how quickly this will hit businesses…
But it stands to reason if SEO gets harder…
And it’s already gotten 3x-100x according to the data above…
Folks will look for other ways to get customers to their business.
Which means some will likely turn to buying more ads…
That could drive up add costs.
Which has me thinking…
This pressure is probably going to push more businesses toward focusing on the customers they already have.
Their email lists.
Their followers on social.
People who've bought from them before.
And they’ll likely be looking for ways to take care of those folks…
And see what else they might want to buy.
